Mardy Bum- our idea

Although we have talked about the fact that we want to use Arctic Monkeys "Mardy Bum" for a music video we have never said what our idea for our music video is. Basically it is going to be performance based. The band will be performing at a secret gig and the lead singer will be singing about his "Mardy Bum" (a person who moans a lot who, in this case, we are interpreting as an ex-girlfriend). During this performance their will be images of a happy relationship falling into the disarray that Alex Turner (the lead singer) is singing about in the song.

--> Look at crowd, see empty space in the audience, near front with reserve sticker on it.(Where girlfriend should be sitting. Then just as drums/guitar starts playing switch to view of band playing.. close up of drums, guitars then lead singer. Then all together.... then back to lead singer just before he starts to sing.

Now then Mardy Bum
I've seen your frown

--> Close up of singers face, then cut to instruments

And it's like looking down the barrel of a gun

--> Camera close up on lead singer, so it looks like he's looking down it

And it goes off

--> Fade to black? As in gun goes off.. Maybe have the camera tilt up and then back down for next bit

And out come all these words
Oh there's a very pleasant side to you
A side I much prefer
It's one that laughs and jokes around

--> Flash back sort of, maybe do it in black and white, to distinguish its a flashback.. a time when they are happy together..

Remember cuddles in the kitchen
Yeah, to get things off the ground
And it was up, up and away
Oh, but it's right hard to remember
That on a day like today when you're all argumentative
And you've got the face on.

--> 360 degree pan, speeding up, then camera looks up at the ceiling
and the image fades into the image of the band playing and lead singer.

##################### -- Ideas up to here.

Well now then Mardy Bum
Oh I'm in trouble again, aren't I
I thought as much
Cause you turned over there
Pulling that silent disappointment face
The one that I can't bear

Can't we laugh and joke around
Remember cuddles in the kitchen
Yeah, to get things off the ground
And it was up, up and away
Oh, but it's right hard to remember
That on a day like today when you're all argumentative
And you've got the face on

Yeah I'm sorry I was late
But I missed the train
And then the traffic was a state
And I can't be arsed to carry on in this debate
That reoccurs ,oh when you say I don't care
But of course I do, yeah I clearly do!

So laugh and joke around
Remember cuddles in the kitchen
Yeah, to get things off the ground
And it was up, up and away
Still it's right hard to remember
That on a day like today when you're all argumentative
And you've got the face on

I like the concept. The success of the video will be in the location and management of the extras for the gig shots - this is quite an undertaking; make sure you SHOOT EARLY in case of problems.

Another idea. May be the gig is like a secret party? We could have the cd cover from the second album by the entrance to the gig. That makes the band more exclusive and reaffirms their Indie status......also at the beginning we are going to have the band walking onto stage...how about following the lead singer through the party and picking up his guitar and then from his POV watching the other band members coming out of the crowd to join him on stage..possibly using jump cuts so that it doesn't take ages for the song to start because music videos are all about the music.

Some continuation of the ideas to the lyrics.

--> There is a little bit of time here with no singing, in this part there are two options, we could do some montage shots of happy times, such as photographs of them together.. or could so some close up of band playing

Well now then Mardy Bum
Oh I'm in trouble again, aren't I
I thought as much
Cause you turned over there
Pulling that silent disappointment face
The one that I can't bear

Possibly having the lead singer singing this whilst sitting on a park bench under a single lamp-post, sort of like in "Stereophonics" video of "It means nothing" when he is sitting on the bed, not looking at the camera but singing along

Yeah i like that idea. Where do you think we should have our live performance? I was thinking that could ask at local village halls to film inside? Then to make the video look urban we could have a shot or two of the band or lead singer in urban locations?

Chris said...

Yeah I know a couple of locations we could film in.. although the interior isn't great -- lime walls. Maybe if we did it in the dark, with spot lights on the band this could solve the problems. We can go visit them and take pictures of them for our location reccie shots.
